Cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolite concentrations in depressive disorder: A meta-analysis of historic evidence
2018, Journal of Psychiatric ResearchCitation Excerpt :In addition, while the acidic metabolites 5-HIAA and HVA are actively transported out of the CSF (Ebert et al., 1980), brain MHPG can freely diffuse across the blood-brain barrier (Jimerson et al., 1984; Kopin et al., 1983). Previous studies have reported that CSF monoamine metabolite concentrations were related with age and sex (Asberg et al., 1984; Banki et al., 1981; Bowers and Gerbode, 1968; Coppen et al., 1972; De Bellis et al., 1993; Gerner et al., 1984; Gjerris et al., 1987; Kishida et al., 2007; Koslow et al., 1983; Little et al., 1999; Mann and Malone, 1997; Post et al., 1973; Reddy et al., 1992; Sullivan et al., 2006b; Westenberg and Verhoeven, 1988; Widerlöv et al., 1988). In our meta-regression analyses, while age was not significantly associated with Hedges's g values of the CSF monoamine metabolites, the proportion of males in each study was associated with the Hedges's g values of CSF HVA levels.
Chronic imipramine treatment differentially alters the brain and plasma amino acid metabolism in Wistar and Wistar Kyoto rats
2015, European Journal of PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Generally, antidepressant drugs, which elevate the monoamine concentration in the synaptic clefts, are used to alleviate the symptoms of major depression. It has been thought that the monoaminergic system plays a key role in the pathogenesis of major depression, because there is robust evidence concerning monoaminergic dysfunction in depressed patients (Gjerris et al., 1987; Papeschi and McClure, 1971; Reddy et al., 1992). This is known as the monoamine hypothesis of depression.
